PAGSANJAN, Philippines – A five-member Crisis Response Team sponsored by Eastern Mennonite Missions partnered with the Integrated Mennonite Churches of the Philippines from January 24-Feb. 5, 2010. The team was responding to a request for assistance following severe flooding caused by three back-to-back typhoons. Team members included Loren Bishop (leader), Michael Good, Justin Martin, Sarah Vojtasek, and Ben Siegrist. Michael Good shares this glimpse into their work. "Promise never to forget me!" The voice came from a sixth-grade Filipino girl with tears streaming down her face. Our team had just climbed into the van after another long day of work and play with the children.

PUERTO MONTT, Chile – Just last month when Steve Shank, Eastern Mennonite Missions’ representative to the Americas, returned from his administrative visit to Chile, he was enthusiastic about the progress being made by the EMM team on a number of very different fronts. PUERTO MONTT, Chile – When the massive 8.8 earthquake struck the central western coast of Chile early Saturday morning, February 27, Dustin and Sarah Gingrich, workers with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), said it felt like they were “riding waves” as their house swayed from side to side for 2-3 minutes. In another part of the city, EMM teammates Michael and Nancy Hostetter and their four children woke with a start as their three-story home “swayed like a ship at sea.”

KURSK, Russia – Russian Baptists at the Trinity Video Seminary in Kursk, Russia, hosted Dr. David W. Shenk, a global consultant with Eastern Mennonite Missions, for 25 hours of teaching on Islam and Christianity during the month of January. Shenk noted that the request for the video series grows out of increasing awareness of the presence and dynamism of Islam throughout Russia and Central Asia. Feelings of apprehension sometimes accompany that awareness, as occasional conflicts have erupted between Muslims and Christians or secularists. One such conflict occurred in Chechnya. Conflicts can also develop between moderate Muslims and minorities that embrace militant visions of a purist Islamic political order.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Thirty-two mission leaders from seven East African nations gathered in this mile-high city for two weeks of intensive cross-cultural missions training, November 23 through December 5, 2009. EMM worker and World Missions Institute (WMI) planner Anna Ralph gave a snapshot of the training: “Imagine people arriving in a foreign city after exhausting international travel. They find themselves surrounded by people speaking an unfamiliar language. They’re served spicy food that irritates their digestion. They sit through hours of teaching in hard-to-understand accents. Then they’re organized into international teams and sent out to ‘go and make disciples.’”
