Chris Epp, HDC administrator
Katie, Lydia and Chris Epp
Katie, Lydia and Chris Epp
In September 2003, Chris, Katie, and Lydia Epp moved from Hesston, Kansas, to Harrisburg, Pa., where Chris began to serve as administrator of the Harrisburg Discipleship Center. For these Midwesterners, the move to a troubled inner-city neighborhood, with its traffic, trash, and attitudes of disregard for others, was a tremendous adjustment. As they began to do foster care, opened their door to neighborhood kids, and participated in home school co-ops, HDC-sponsored community outreaches, and a soccer league, they genuinely linked to what God is doing at HDC and beyond.

“I want to eat, sleep, and breathe where ministry happens,” Chris says. The Epps have done just that, purchasing a house directly across the street from the Center. They are not the only DM-connected people who have moved into the area – more than a dozen DM alumni have moved to the area. Chris continues, “I see HDC becoming more relevant to the local community, having a greater sense of responsibility to the community.”

Chris has helped to define a new role, a children’s ministry coordinator position. In this role, Erica Hostetler coordinates four activities each week for neighborhood children, in partnership with New Hope Community Church. DM alum Jason Rissler pastors New Hope, and the church rents office space from HDC.

Chris sees the deep needs of broken and unfulfilled lives around him, and also sees a lot of opportunity for others to move into the area to serve in long-term ministry. He says, “What brings me energy to be a part of the Spirit’s teaching and equipping of believers to be catalysts of healthy transformation wherever they are in life. God’s journey for me is to continue to refine my sense of call and purpose, to learn to bloom where I’m planted – not always looking for a new environment to try to find my ‘sweet spot,’ but to let that develop where I am. I want to become more focused, letting go of a sense of obligation try to do everything myself.”

It is not always easy, as he has had to deal with many difficult and painful situations. But he says, “I have learned to appreciate God’s working in the midst of that. But I wouldn’t want to give up living here as long as God is leading. I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
