Jan is the one who takes care of details like paying bills and getting visas. DM office manager Stacy Nofziger says, “The thing I enjoy most about working with her is that we have similar responsibilities, so she can help me. She is very knowledgeable!” She adds, “She loves backpacking, hot tea, and getting cozy with a book on rainy days.” Jan’s family home was on the corner of her grandfather’s farm in York, Pennsylvania, but she insists that she’s not really a farm girl. Shy and studious at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMH), she enjoyed going to Eastern College after graduation because “it was a Christian environment that was more diverse than LMH. It challenged me to step out in leadership.” After graduating in 2001 with a degree in music education, Jan toured with a ministry called Celebrant Singers and tried substitute teaching before ending up as a part-time receptionist at Eastern Mennonite Missions. She says, “I could always see down the DM hall and it seemed they were always having a good time and enjoying what they did.” So when she heard of the full-time position at HDC, she went for it. She says, “I started at the beginning of a winter training; there was so much going on with different types of activities that participants were going through. I was impressed with how DM, and also EMM, would train and take of their participants. Random Jan fact Jan's pet peeve? “People who can't merge at the end of the ramp on 283!”
| “I love to see young adults giving themselves fully to something that brings such growth and transformation. Among the volunteer staff, I see them grow into their roles and learn how to be leaders, to work as a team, and encourage and challenge each other. “This environment is like a spiritual greenhouse! I see young adults learning and growing so much in seeing who they are, and in what God is doing through them and in the world. What the participants have to offer to others is important, but what they learn is just as important for them!” “For the future, I'm confident God has called me to a life other than buying a house in a nice little suburban neighborhood, and having an 8-5 job for the rest of my life. It could very easily involve missions, although I don't have a clear picture of what that will look like at this point, and although I'm sometimes torn, I'm excited knowing that God has the best adventure in mind for me.”
